AJ Fernandez is undoubtedly one of the most prolific cigar makers of the modern era. Raised in Cuba, he now operates 10 tobacco farms and 2 cigar factories in Nicaragua. Between these facilities, over 100,000 cigars a day are produced under his watchful eye. His true passion, and why he is able to produce such a wide variety of superior quality premium cigars, is the tobacco that he grows. Without quality materials, your product will never be exceptional. It is this philosophy that drives him to spend equal time between farms and factories. Each tobacco leaf must meet his high standards, and each cigar must be expertly constructed. He takes great pride in his creations and would never attach his name to the end product if it didn’t meet his standards.
The San Lotano is a special brand for AJ Fernandez. It’s the name of his family’s brand produced before the communist revolution in Cuba, the name of one of his tobacco farms in Nicaragua, and the name of his 1st release bearing his name. Before 2010 (and release of San Lotano), he had been making third-party cigars for quite some time before he branched out on his own. Though the blends and shapes of the San Lotano line have evolved over the years, the quality of the product has remained exceptional. The San Lotano The Bull uses a blend of Nicaragua filler and binder leaves that is topped by a dark chocolate colored Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Tasting notes include meaty flavors of leather, earth, and dark coffee with hints of cedar, pepper, and maple syrup. Even though this cigar is on the fuller side of the strength spectrum, the flavors are smooth and well balanced. It’s not easy to make a strong cigar that has balance, but AJ does it with aplomb.
