My Father FonsecaFonseca By My Father Toro Gordo (6x55 / Box 20)
Fonseca by My Father Cigars may just be, dare I say, the most exciting cigar release of 2020. Pepin Garcia, owner of My Father is now known as being one of the most popular and respected blenders in the cigar industry. Recipient of two #1 Cigar of the Year awards by Cigar Aficionado, Garcia has shown and proven his legendary blending skills in spades- so when we heard that My Father had acquired the legendary Cuban heavyweight brand known as Fonseca, we nearly fell out of our chairs. Here’s a little backstory on the brand:
Over one hundred years ago, Don Fransisco Fonseca set up his factory in Havana Cuba and began crafting cigars with his name. Although these cigars are still produced today, the brand as a whole is no longer privately-owned; it’s part of the Cubatabaco and Habanos family. After Cuban Fonseca’s were nationalized by Fidel Castro, a new Fonseca emerged, and the brand began production not only in Cuba, but also in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua headed by the Quesada family. In December, My Father Cigars rocked the industry and acquired the brand. A cool piece of the history puzzle is that Pepin Garcia himself at one time worked for the Fonseca brand in Cuba!
The blend itself is groundbreaking for My Father Cigars, because they have created a brand new wrapper specifically for this brand- a shade-grown Corojo 99 Rosado. We at Cigar King have personally smoked the cigar and can tell you this: It isn’t anything like the quintessential my father “pepper bomb” cigar- it’s much milder! With that being said, it’s still a solid medium-strength smoke, but with a tamed and relaxed spice that will thrill. The profile is light and pleasant, while still offering a fantastic richness and subtle earthiness.
