In 1843, a German banker named Hermann Upmann moved to Havana, Cuba to open an import/export business for a German firm that bought and sold tobaccos. In 1844, he purchased a small local cigar factory, and soon after the 1st H. Upmann cigar was born. Hermann could never have imagined that his little endeavor would become one of the world’s best known cigar brands. He was known for his innovation in the tobacco business and is credited with being the 1st cigar maker to package his cigars in cedar boxes. Honoring that commitment to innovation is what Altadis’ Grupo de Maestros is all about. Their guiding principle is to push the boundaries of a brand, while honoring the traditions and heritage of the brand’s past. It’s no surprise the group turned to AJ Fernandez to create his version of this famed brand.
H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez is another masterpiece by this eponymous cigar maker. Fernandez relishes the opportunity to create new blends worthy to bear the name of historical Cuban brands. As a Cuban ex-pat, he takes pride in creating world class cigars just like this in one of his Nicaraguan factories. But, if the mark bears his name as well, he pulls out all of the stops to ensure it is a world class product. He begins with a filler core of Dominican Piloto Cubano tobaccos and Nicaraguan Crollo 98 leaves from his farms. A Nicaraguan Corojo 99 binder is used along with a beautiful Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf used for the wrapper. The blend features tasting notes of leather, cocoa, and roasted nuts along with hints of coffee, cedar, and hints of sweetness. H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez is another testament to the capability of this famed cigar maker.
