In 1843, a German banker named Hermann Upmann moved to Havana, Cuba to open an import/export business for a German firm. In 1844, he purchased a small local cigar factory and soon after the 1st H. Upmann cigar was born. Hermann’s little endeavor would become one of the world’s best known cigar brands. Upmann is also credited with being the 1st cigar maker to package his cigars in cedar boxes. While the brand has seen some ups and downs over years and changes in manufacturing locations, this H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon blend is something special.
Following the Communist revolution in Cuba, cigar makers that fled the island relaunched the H. Upmann brand in the Dominican Republic. This new H. Upmann featured a Cameroon wrapper, but during the cigar boom of the 1990s, Cameroon tobacco became scarce and they switched to an inferior Indonesian wrapper. But Cameroon is back, baby! The H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon uses a blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian tobaccos for the filler and binder along with a well-aged genuine African Cameroon wrapper. It is a well-balanced, medium bodied blend with flavors of cedar, earth, and coffee with a slightly sweet finish. It’s a very pleasant cigar that can be enjoyed anytime of the day!
