Henry Clay is a brand that can trace its roots back to the 1840s. It was named after a former speaker of the US House of Representatives. Henry Clay was a member of the War Hawk faction and pushed the US to declare war on Britain in 1812. He was unpolished, aggressive, and brash, and the cigars that bore his name tended to possess similar qualities. For many years the brand featured rough-looking Broadleaf wrappers and unconventional shapes; they were never pressed into smooth shapes. However, one thing that was always consistent was the fact that Henry Clay cigars were extremely flavorful.
Bringing the Henry Clay brand into the 21st century was no easy task. Starting with the name War Hawk, one might assume this is a super strong, aggressive cigar. The cigar makers took a unique approach to ensure this was not the case while also ensuring the brand was true to its roots of a flavorful cigar. Starting with Honduran filler tobaccos, they added a USA Connecticut Broadleaf binder (usually this tobacco is used for Henry Clay wrapper) and finished with a glowing Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapper. The result is a medium strength cigar that is simply loaded with flavor. Tasting notes include cream, cedar, and nuts with hints of dark coffees, earth, and cocoa. This is a tremendously favorfull cigar worthy of the Henry Clay name.
