Joya de Nicaragua has a well-deserved reputation for making high-quality, very bold, and flavorful cigars using Nicaraguan tobaccos. In the 1970s, it was considered the finest brand in Nicaragua and possibly the world. To commemorate this notoriety, Joya de Nicaragua created the Antano 1970 to remind the world what they were capable of. At the time of its release, Nicaraguan cigars were not known for their strength. Instead it was the flavor of the tobacco that Nicaraguan cigars were really known for. To say the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 blew the doors off the cigar world would be an understatement. It was one of the boldest cigars ever created that had both strength and flavor. It cemented Joya de Nicaragua’s legacy as a world class manufacturer.
When the Joya de Nicaragua’s Antaño 1970 hit the scene it was a massive success. Never before had a company released such a strong and bold cigar. It truly shifted the landscape on what a strong cigar with flavor could achieve. A few years later, when strolling through their aging room, the good folks at JDN discovered a stash of original release cigars and started smoking them. To their surprise, these extra-aged Antaño cigars were still strong, but the age allowed the flavors to balance and shine. They quickly made a decision to create what is now known as the Antaño Gran Reserva. Tasting notes include flavors of pepper, earth, and leather along with hints of walnut, espresso, and a maple syrup sweetness. While these cigars are strong, bold, and well refined, they are not for the faint of heart.
