On one hand you can count the number of cigar makers who arrived on the scene and changed the game. At the top of that very short list is Jose “Pepin” Garcia, and boy did he turn the industry on its ear. At the time, there was no one making cigars that captured the essence and flavor of Cuban cigars. His unique fermenting and blending style coupled with his small batch production in Miami quickly catapulted his cigars to the top of aficionados’ hit lists. With his well-deserved success, expansion was the only way to keep up with demand. He quickly established the My Father factory in Nicaragua and began to transfer production and expand his portfolio. One of the first big hits his new factory produced was the Flor de las Antillas and was his first blend to earn Cigar Aficionado’s prestigious Cigar of the Year award.
The Fonseca brand dates back to 1892 when its founder, Don Francisco E. Fonseca established his own factory and cigar brand bearing his family name in Havana, Cuba. Over the past 120 years Fonseca has been one of the most recognizable brands and has been produced in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua. For decades the brand was owned and produced by legendary cigar maker Manuel Quesada in the Dominican Republic. Quesada’s Fonseca cigars were considered some of the finest cigars produced in the DR, but he knew that for the brand to succeed in the current premium cigar market, he would have to make some changes. For years, Pepin Garcia of My Father cigars had been asking for the opportunity to create a modern rendition of this historic brand with Quesada. Instead Manuel decided it was time to let his friend take over the brand and breathe new life into it. He sold the rights to Garcia who quickly formulated a new Fonseca cigar for the modern age. The Fonseca by My Father is a whole new chapter for this classic brand. Who better to reimagine this classic Cuban brand than the Garcia family of My Father cigars? Expertly combining a blend of Garcia grown Nicaraguan tobaccos for the filler and binder core, Pepin selected a proprietary shade grown Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 Rosado wrapper to create this stellar cigar. Flavors of earth, coffee, and cedar are present along with hints of pepper, cinnamon, and citrus. The Fonseca by My Father is a smooth, well-balanced, and flavorful cigar that brings this famous brand into the modern age.
