On one hand you can count the number of cigar makers who arrived on the scene and changed the game. At the top of that very short list is Jose “Pepin” Garcia, and boy did he turn the industry on its ear. At the time, there was no one making cigars that captured the essence and flavor of Cuban cigars. His unique fermenting and blending style coupled with his small batch production in Miami quickly catapulted his cigars to the top of aficionados’ hit lists. With his well-deserved success, expansion was the only way to keep up with demand. He quickly established the My Father factory in Nicaragua and began to transfer production and expand his portfolio. One of the first big hits his new factory produced was the Flor de las Antillas and was his first blend to earn Cigar Aficionado’s prestigious Cigar of the Year award.
The La Antiguedad by My Father Cigars can be viewed as the big brother to the Flor de Las Antillas, or as the Garcia family puts it, “like the Flor de Las Antillas on steroids”. For those unaware, the aforementioned Flor de Las Antillas took home the coveted Cigar of the Year award from Cigar Aficionado in 2012. Needless to say, when the La Antiguedad was announced as the follow-up blend from My Father Cigars just a short while after winning that award, many people quickly took notice; and La Antiguedad became an instant classic. Blended by Don Pepin Garcia himself, the La Antiguedad features an Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper, a split between authentic Cuban seed Criollo and Corojo is used for the binder, and several other rich Nicaraguan leaves are utilized for the filler. Altogether, these leaves culminate to create a cigar that is both sophisticated and impeccably balanced. Pepin fans will no doubt fall in the love with this cigar, and instantly recognize the intense up-front pepper and spice, earthy soil, and leathery sweetness that has made Pepin’s blends so famous.
