The J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is the oldest continuously functioning cigar company in America. That’s right, they still mass produce cigars right here in the old US of A. In 1895, the family’s patriarch, Julius C. Newman began his company in the heartland of America (Cleveland, Ohio). He borrowed $50 from his family to set up shop and fulfill an order for 500 handmade cigars to a local grocer. The brand continued to grow and thrive. In 1954 the family decided to move the factory from Cleveland to Tampa, Florida where they remain today. They purchased a large factory called El Reloj, and they continue to produce cigars there to this day. While most of the cigars made there are made by machine, the factory has a long history of producing premium, handmade cigars too.
The American is a brand with history that dates back to 1910 when the El Reloj cigar factory was first opened. When Drew Newman (the 4th generation of Newman Men in the industry) wanted to make his mark, he desired to create a special cigar that would honor the past and blaze a trail into the future. He found an old cigar band in the factory archives with the name “The American.” It set him on a path to create a brand that honors America’s cigar tradition by rolling world-class cigars in America using the finest American-grown, aged, heirloom tobaccos. He didn’t stop there. He also insisted on using American made and sourced cabinets, bands, and boxes in its production. The blend features tobaccos grown in Pennsylvania and Connecticut for the filler and binder, while the wrapper is grown in Florida. Tasting notes include flavors of earth, leather, and dried fruits along with hints of citrus, pepper, and toasted breads. The profile of the American is unique and satisfying.
